All You Need Is Kill, Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s widely praised breakthrough novel, was nominated for Japan’s Seiun Awards, published in Japanese and English, and adapted to manga beginning this past January. Warner Bros. is bringing it to a theater near you on June 6 as Edge of Tomorrow, featuring Tom Cruise as yet another unlikely Japanese warrior (for more info, see The Last Samurai – or maybe not).
In Sakurazaka’s imaginative literary world, the United Defense Force has been fighting Mimics, a nightmarish advance force sent by a race that wants to remake the earth into a habitat in which they can live. That means humanity has to die.
Keiji, a rookie warrior, sustains a horrible injury in his first battle. Rita Vratiski, a virtual goddess of destruction reverentially known as the Full Metal B****, finds him as he bleeds out. He manages to ask her if this is the end. ”Yeah, “ she tells him, “But I’ll stay with you until you die.” And die he does.
Then he wakes up. Through a convergence of unlikely events, he is fated for this to happen over and over again. Every time he dies, he loops back in time. He soon realizes he can train in such a way that he might be able to eventually win the battle – and perhaps the war – on behalf of humanity. He takes courage from the mindset of the samurai: “Strike down the enemy, and learn.” He shakes off his brooding nihilism, stops experimenting with ways to die, and chooses to fight.
“So long as the wind blows, I‘m born again, and I die. I can’t take anything with me to my next life. The only things I get to keep are my solitude, a fear that no one can understand, and the feel of the trigger against my finger. “It’s a ******-up world, with ******-up rules. So **** it.”
Shakespeare it’s not, but you get the point. He’s mad, he’s bad, and he’s ready to massacre some Mimics. Unfortunately, the Mimics have loopers too, and with each successive battle they learn as well. It’s a race to see who can learn quickly enough to exterminate the other. Fortunately, Keiji’s’s not alone. He learns that Rita is stuck in the loops too. Maybe – just maybe – the two of them can save the world.

The story is violent, vulgar, epic, mesmerizing, and at times strangely moving. It may be marketed to a YA audience, but it’s certainly adult in its content (the manga version both cleans it up and drains it of its power). If you choose to read it, keep an eye out for a number of key themes.
It’s a story about human atrocity. In the same way that District 9 addressed apartheid, All You Need Is Kill uses an alien race to highlight a different human horror: the many brutal, genocidal colonizations in human history. The invaders simply refuse to see humanity as having worth, and as a result feel no remorse in annihilating them. It hits pretty close to home.
It’s a story about the tragic necessity of violence and war. Keiji notes,
“I’d become – a machine with blood and nerves in place of oil and wires. A machine doesn’t get distracted. A machine doesn’t cry. A machine wears the same bitter smile day in, day out. It reads the battle as it unfolds. It’s eyes scan for the next enemy before it’s finished killing the first, and its mind is already thinking about the third. It wasn’t lucky, and it wasn’t unlucky. It just was. So I kept fighting.”
They have to fight. There is no way around that. You want guys like Keiji on your side. However, war on the ground if very different from the stylized Spartan glory of 300. Keiji heroically commits to a cause greater than himself even as he crumbles inside:
“It was too hard to face the friends you knew were going to die. Trapped in a cruel, unending nightmare, your only thoughts were for them. You couldn’t bear to lose even one of them, no matter who.”
Even the demi-goddess of this war, Rita, is haunted by the fact that there will always be those she cannot save. A first Lieutenant named Hendricks is an admirable man in every way: he never swears, he faithfully loves his wife, and he treats Rita like a sister. Yet he always dies. In every loop. Rita tries to save him every time – she wants to keep looping until she can – but at what cost? The Mimics are learning, and she could jeopardize humanity for the sake of one if she keeps on going back.
It’s a story about human nature and fate. To what degree are our lives determined? Do we ever get to choose what we want to do, or are we stuck with our genetic programming? In the end, do those of us destined for greatness matter more than those burdened with lesser fates?
“If DNA determined a person’s height or the shape of their face, why not their less obvious traits too? Our fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers – ultimately every individual was the product of the blood that flowed in the veins of those who came before. An impartial machine could read that information and assign a value to it, as simple as measuring height or weight.
What if someone who had the potential to discover a formula to unlick the mysteries of the universe wanted to become a pulp fiction writer? What if someone who had the potential to create unparalleled gastronomic delicacies had his heart set on civil engineering? There is what we desire to do, and whet we are able to do. When those two things don’t coincide, which path should we pursue to find happiness?
It’s a story about our need for a savior. Humanity is about to be destroyed by an enemy it cannot hope to conquer on its own. Death is certain without a seemingly miraculous intervention. An unexpected quirk of science eventually offers the miraculous loops, and Rita and Keiji provide a couple of very human “saviors” who “redeem” others. In the end, Rita gives her life so humanity can live – and Keiji does not repeat the loop in order to save her. One more time might give the Mimics their final solution.
Rita sacrifices her life for humanity; Keiji sacrifices the one he loves for the same reason. It’s tough to be a savior, even when the “s” is small. All You Need Is Kill is certainly not the gospel, but one can at least hear a whisper of John 15:13 amid the chaos and roar of war.

Well, I am not surprised. Here we have yet another movie that follows in sync with; Underworld, The Sixth Sense, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and TV programs such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ghost Whisper, and characters like Harry Potter and even video games like Doom or the Darkness have caused our kids and many adults to buy into a spirituality that is clearly not biblical. I won’t even mention the darkness that is pursued during the week and on Sunday we seem to wash our hands in it thinking everything is OK. Well, its not. One of God’s attributes is that God is a God of wrath (although you will rarely hear a sermon on this from the pulpit). Where are the good movie-makers? Why don’t they stand up for their craft and speak out? I think it is fear, fear that it will cut into their lively hood. It is all about money isn’t it? Thanks Anthony for standing up against this.
