Another important fact and name of God is that of Creator. Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” God is the creator of all things and this is a very important concept to understand about God as it comes to the world today. Many people believe that God has not had a hand in our beginning. However, this idea is off base based on the very first verse of the Word. 2 Peter 3:1-9 highlights this argument:
Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
A funny fact about this passage is the truth it tells concerning unbelieving man’s argument against God. You can almost take a look at any internet forum or written debate on the subject of the origin of life or the existence of God and see the scoffers (atheists) saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?” You have to hand it to the amazing accuracy of God’s Word! This passage also shows us some amazing truths. The first is in context of what we were talking about as God being our Creator. The second truth in this passage in 2 Peter shows that God is far above man in His abilities of perception (similar to what we saw in Numbers 23:19). Though a man can only view one day as one day, time has no meaning with God.
2 Peter 3:8 seems to be in contrast to the point some Christians make today. Mainly, God does not know everything and He does not know the future. These Christians like to point out that God has just been around forever and that He is a very good guesser but this view is just not supported in the Word. If God cannot tell the future and does not know all then He is like us; thus, one day would not be like a thousand to God because he perceives time the same way a human does. Other verses bring into question this notion of God not knowing the future. According to John 17:24, God loved Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world. John 17:24, “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” Well, you might say, “That’s Jesus Christ, and it’s hardly surprising as Jesus Christ is God’s only begotten Son.” God has already answered that statement with a rebuttal of His own in Ephesians 1:3-5: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will…” As you can see, God chose each of us individually before the foundation of the world as well.
